Welcome, if you’ve made it this far, it means the QR code is still working!
Tasting wine doesn’t have to be complicated, so we have designed this to be a fun, stress-free way to explore our Sealwood wines in a fun, relaxed way. You don’t need to know all the right words, understand fancy wine terminology or be able to tell us exactly which vineyard a grape came from 20 miles away. The chances are, if you feel like something is right, some fancy sommelier somewhere across the globe has probably said it!
We like to keep things simple: Smell, Sip, Savour
It’s an easy way to slow down, pay attention to what’s in your glass and, most importantly, work out what you actually enjoy.
But before we get to that, really give yourself a chance to have a look at the wine. Take a moment to notice the colour and clarity. It’s a chance to take it in properly.
Smell
Give your glass a gentle swirl and have a sniff. The swirl is basically just a way to aerate the wine and release some of the scents. It also has the upside of making you look very financially successful – so congratulations!
A huge part of what we experience as “taste” actually comes from our sense of smell, so this is where you might start to notice different aromas in the wine.
Fruit? Flowers? Citrus? Something you can’t quite put your finger on?
There’s no wrong answer. If you smell something that reminds you of something different to our notes, go with it. Wine tasting is subjective, after all. What you tend to find is that most of our wines have a fruit-forward aroma. That comes from the grape varieties themselves, as well as the growing conditions and winemaking process – there is no fruit other than the grapes in these wines, interestingly!
Sip
Now for the good bit.
Take a sip and let the wine sit on your palate for a moment. Think about the flavours, how it feels and what stays with you afterwards.
Is it fresh? Fruity? Dry? Smooth? Sharp? Would you happily have another glass?
And that last question is probably the one we care about most.
Savour
And now… neck it!
No, we are joking, put that glass down! Don’t rush to the next sip.
Take a moment to think about what you’ve just tasted. What flavours are still there? How long does it linger? Most importantly – did you enjoy it?
This is the bit where you decide what you think.
The Score cards!
You may have also noticed this on the back of the wine-tasting notes! Forget scores out of 100 or complicated wine terminology. This is about what you like!
Very simple and straightforward. Give each wine a score from 1–5 as you do each of our steps:
1 – No thanks
2 – Not really my thing
3 – I’d have another
4 – Ooh, I like this
5 – Fill me up immediately!
There’s no right or wrong score. You might love a wine that someone else doesn’t, and that’s completely the point. Have a smell, take a sip, savour it, and see which one you’d happily fill your glass with again.
At the end of the day, wine tasting is about one thing: finding the wines you want to drink. So forget the rules, trust your taste, and if you find a 5, you know what to do.
Cheers!
P.s. We have a secret competition going on for those who have completed our wine tasting scorecards!
To enter, post the card with your results online and tag our Facebook or Instagram account so we can see it. Once we hit 35 entries, all of you will be entered into a prize draw to win a big bottle of your highest-rated Sealwood wine.
